And on the third day

I said below that I shouldn't post for three days, so this'll be a case of "the third day" rather than "72 hours". :-)A guy at work stepped out of the break room, having seen an ad for a pay-per-view fight, which he said he would not be paying for. He said he and friends had paid for a few back when Tyson was fighting. I mentioned that I hadn't watched any fights since Ali was boxing... and naturally I thought of a song:

At the end of the rainbow

I once saw the apparent end of a rainbow. I was on I-10 headed eastbound (homeward) between I-45 and US-59, where the University of Houston Downtown is, and the way the light fell with the mist, the end of the rainbow appeared to be right there in front of my car. The only thing I saw at the end was pavement.I was thinking just now that there's supposed to be a golden pot at the end of the rainbow, and that The Golden Pot is a Chinese restaurant. Chinese food beats hopes and dreams any day of the year.

Then Came Bronson

I don't actually remember this show. I've heard the name, but I just ran across it when I was reading about a book called "Motostars — Celebrities + Motorcycles". The book doesn't focus completely on the celebrities, actually, though there's apparently a pretty good section on Steve McQueen. I haven't read it... just basing this on the review. There's some insight into why people ride, and sections about particular motorcycles that people remember. And I found a (link to Google video) pretty nice video a guy put together of his own travels, using the full song "Long Lonesome Highway" by Michael Parks, who both sang the theme song and was the star of "Then Came Bronson", the opening and closing credits of which I showed you at the top of this post. (The closing credits only play about 45 seconds of the song.)By the way, there's a Pleo group for motorcycle enthusiasts, so if you ride or if you're interested, check it out. There aren't many members y...

Telephone, telegraph, television, Telecaster

No telepathy or telekinesis, just a lot of telephony going on today about the telemetry. Days of "meeting" with people using the telephone are days of stress. The phone doesn't cause the stress, it's a symptom. At least I found and fixed a bug that may be the source of one of the problems. I should be certain that it was the problem but my confidence tank is running on reserve right now, so instead of celebrating, I'm experiencing the dread that I'm going to get another phone call.

Friday the 21st, Jesse is 22 years old. This "at bat" picture is one of my favorites of Jesse.Life's going great for you! I'm proud of the man you've become. You're way further along into adulthood than I was at your age.Happy birthday, Jesse. I love you.

Clocks

I don't know the reason, but I've always liked clocks and watches. When I was little, I had a music box shaped like a grandfather clock, and it played the song "My Grandfather's Clock" (made famous by Tennessee Ernie Ford). I'm sure I've forgotten most of my toys, but I won't forget that.My dad had a self-winding Bulova watch when I was growing up. When he moved his arm, a kinetic device inside the watch attached to the winding mechanism would keep the watch wound. I remember him shaking the watch when he got up in the morning to ensure that it was wound... which sort-of defeats the purpose. (Maybe his experience was that it wound down too far overnight.) I have a Seiko Kinetic watch now that functions on a similar principle. Instead of winding a mechanical watch, it charges a capacitor that keeps the quartz engine running. If I don't wear the watch for three days, it stops. These days, we have analog wall clocks with digital quartz movements and lightweight hands, so that...

When we picked up my dad at his office he said I couldn't play with his copying machine, but I forgot. He also said to watch out for the books on his desk, and I was careful as could be except for my elbow. He also said don't fool around with his phone, but I think I called Australia. My dad said please don't pick him up anymore.
