Help Wanted (Inquire Within) 12-10-08 12:21am PST
Here's my problem. I'm a Computer Consultant and I travel around the US and some overseas working with our customers. There is the core work that I do, and then there are a ton of extras that have to be done in order to do the core work (make travel arrangements, travel to customer site, manage expense reimbursement, etc). I'm able to manage everything except for the expense reimbursement. Whereas it's not too challenging of a process... I hate counting beans. I would rather watch paint dry. After traveling and working all week when I would really like to find something more spiritually productive in my off hours.

So...I'm looking to hire a little help. I figure it's a cost of doing business that I'll have to pay out of pocket. I've never hired anyone before but I can't see it being all that much trouble. With my utter loathing of this task I tend to take too much time doing it because I need a "break" every 5 minutes. I really can't see it going more than 20hrs a month at a liberal estimate.

Does anybody have any ideas for something like this? I would really rather to work with someone I know and can trust. I don't require a lot of effort or accounting skills from anyone for this. I figure I'll need the person to log the numbers I give in Excel and then input them into a webpage we've got setup on a weekly basis. I'll have to handle all the receipt scanning and faxing but I've got a portable scanner and e-fax. I imagine it will be a little bit to create a process for this so any input is most welcome.

In any event, if you have any ideas for this freely let me know. If you think it might be something you are interested in and need some extra money each month then shoot me a private message with your thoughts and/or email and we can chat about it.

josephwcook@gmail.com

Thanks!

-Joe

** p.s. I was thinking of paying on a per house basis. If you have any thoughts as to what something like this might cost then please let me know. I want to be very fair. Since it's coming out of my own pocket I also need to make sure I'm up for the cost! :)
marlaAha, finally got so fed up with it, eh?
whipsmileMy brother's wife is an accountant, I know they could use extra money and she would do an amazing job! Just let me know!
dragonflyHey stranger. Miss talking to ya. Where are ya right now?

amy_szaboWhat ever happened to coming to Ohio???
texasladyGuess who I saw on Saturday??? MICHELLE!!!! :)
jimmybuckWe have the same issues with my work. It's a hassle, but they try to make it as easy as possible by allowing many of our expenses to be charged directly to the company. Usually, it's only per diem, hotels, and mileage that piles up.
vandefinally decided to subcontract out your work... now your talkin' I'll put some feelers out there for you.
amy_szaboWell, I can't blame you for wanting to get out of here! That was one COLD weekend!!! Christmas was pretty good. We actually waited till New Years Day to open presents. How was YOUR Christmas?

Toronto 11-19-08 12:17pm PST
Anyone want to go to Toronto? Say like, this weekend? :D We have some emergency work needing to be done and my thanksgiving plans were a bit up in the air so I'm thinking of just turning it into a nice long vacation afterwards. :) I've never been to Canada so it's a good opportunity and I just happened to notice there are some ski resorts an hour away. I sense much fun coming this week.

After Canada, O-H-I-O! Maybe I'll see Drew Carey :)
bbeasleySounds like fun! I'd love to go skiing - never been. But we'll be with family in Raleigh for Thanksgiving.
happinessisthelordwoot! you have all the fun :P
whipsmileI'll go, oh wait...I have plans! argh.
sarahsmiletake some mittens and a scarf
joekittens?
amy_szaboJust so you know, Ohio RULES!
cdillman23Enjoy Canada! It has been years since I've been there!
arsenalYes, I've been to Canada but I can't help but think that they stayed loyal to King George III while we threw off the shakles of British Rule. They should have joined us and formed an even GREATER United States.
vandeDude, Thanksgiving plans should never be up in the air. It's turkey time foe sho.
jenenryHappy Black Friday!

Back Stateside 11-06-08 04:25pm PST
In Newark, waiting for my connection to Greensboro, NC for 1000 Voices. See you all there!
marlaWelcome back, and hope you have an encouraging time in NC! (And no, I am NOT internet stalking you...)
marlaYou want an internet stalker? Hrm. And spiritual encouragement was definitely the best choice. You'll just have to get some more over Thanksgiving in Houston!! *hopeful look*
cdillman23I wish I could see you but things aren't working out that way. :(
whipsmileI won't be there, you travelin' man.
dragonflyGot your text. I'll be there for the singing tomorrow. See you then!
bbeasleyTripp wants your number.
amy_szaboWelcome back!
bbeasleyYeah, but.... even from bad mistakes, good friendships can come out of them. :)
whipsmileyou got it, buddy!
marlaI'll be in Houston from 10pm on Tues through 7:30pm on Sat.
happinessisthelordHey! I'm not sure how your sched would work with work, but mine (along with SW availability) only allows for Dec 1-4 or maybe Dec 15-18. I would prefer the latter, but I'm not technically off on the 15th, but could prob arrange. Let me know what you think please! Hope your day is great and that your wk is off to a good start!
lordradon't play wow too much ...
sarahphimJen Kearney is in Toronto.

Done with my work! 11-01-08 02:47pm PST
Sorry if I've been a bit unresponsive to some of your emails. Internet and free time have been quite sparse these past couple of weeks. Oh the things I take for granted in my land of luxury. I wish I had kept an actual journal.

My time in England is drawing to a close very shortly but the experience has been quite wonderful despite its challenges. The week before I was to leave a bit of a bomb was dropped on me. It seems I was not only going to be leading the most aggressive install schedule that we have ever had to do with the highest level of visibility in our company that can be had, but doing so in a country I had never navigated before while taking care of the VP of the customer's Advanced Engineering dept who decided to come along at the last minute from the U.S. to micromanage the install and who just so happens to be handicapped and wheelchair bound.

Now you who know me personally hopefully know that I've got a kind heart and will do anything for anyone in real need. My biggest challenge comes when the person in need of helping just so happens to be the biggest jerkface I have met in a long while. On the one hand my heart goes out to him and looks to help as a care giver, but how do you do that when the hand wants to reach out and push his chair down the stairs :P. Now I understand this poor soul has a considerably rougher life than most, my heart bleeds for that. I'm an equal opportunity hater though. A jerk is jerk regardless of ethnicity, religious beliefs, or physical stature. Whatever your lot in life, don't be mean. You never know when you'll need a helping hand.

"Help me help you." This has begun to be my phrase of choice for obvious reasons :)

I realize most of you will echo the mountain of sermons I have been preaching to myself this entire time. "Do good unto all men", "heap coals of fire", etc. I encourage those because hearing it from multiple sources might just make doing so a little easier :P Someone who doesn't have this same challenge speak up and let us all know what the secret is. :)

Ultimately I guess if you have to work, despite the conditions, you might as well work someplace with enjoyable scenery rather than a stuffy 3'x 3' spot of carpeting in cubicle land. Besides, you never know what good gifts God will set before you on your way.

I wish you all the best. I'll be back soon'ish. I have to... they'll deport me if I stay too long :)

Time for Holiday!

Cheers Mates
cherri:) Make it a great day!
bbeasleyYou do have a good attitude despite your hardships the past couple weeks. Just look outside, take a deep breath and take in that beautiful scenery! Stay safe!
marlayou've still got a few days to find that English hottie and get yourself a work permit... *grin*
happinessisthelord“Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance. It is the Lord Christ whom you serve. Col. 3:23-24 (does the help? :) )
happinessisthelordoh, you can't read my mind? bummer.
marlaWell, you would still need a visa! And if you wanted to work in another country, you'd still need the permit. :)
marlaIt is EASIER to get a visa when you're married to a national. So I'm not raining on your parade, just providing a bit of realism. *grin*
marlaBummer. HAHAHA ;)
amy_szaboWell said!
whipsmilenow come on, you are way too awesome of a guy to not help...even a jerkface jerky jerkman.
trxYou're welcome to spend Thanksgiving with us camping just north of Houston....
marlaDEFINITELY WORTH IT. Seriously!!
texasladyI've felt so neglected.... lol ;)
sarahphimBecause I didn't have you on my friends list...sorry!
dragonflySee you tomorrow my friend :)

Still in the UK 10-27-08 01:54am PST
Sorry internet communication has been a bit touch and go all. Heading to Milton Keynes today! Guess it's more modern *ick but it'll be a nice train ride through the country side. I'll be done by Wednesday hopefully then can flip these 5am-11pm work days into being a total tourist!

Had a most wonderful day with brethren yesterday. Isn't it great, The Tie that Binds? :)

More to come...

joe
marlaThat reminds me - if you ever get a chance, read Bill Bryson's "Notes from a Small Island." He has some great descriptions of Milton Keynes.
happinessisthelordyes, God's design for us to have family anywhere and at anytime is more than I ever I thought I'd need and certainly more than I deserve! I hope you're taking pictures!
mrsocalindeed
