What a day! Because Henry's symptoms were exactly the same as Liam's at the beginning I was fairly confident we were dealing with the same thing. I went up to the doctor today prepared for the worst- kids at a friend's house, overnight bag for me (twice I've been stuck at Vanderbilt overnight unexpectedly with babies having surgery- what are the odds?!), and lots of bottles/changes of clothes for Henry. Fortunately, all the preparation was not really needed. He had his ultrasound and he does indeed have pyloric stenosis, but we caught it so early that there was no mad dash to the OR. Instead I was shocked to be told that we had an appointment with a surgeon in the morning for a consult. So that's where we are right now- consult in the morning and hopefully surgery tomorrow or the next day. I really can't imagine them waiting any longer because as we watched on the ultrasound no food was passing out of his stomach. But he is still having wet diapers and looking ok so he isn't dehydrated yet. Of course, the goal is to get him to surgery before that happens.
Honestly, I'm just totally weirded out by the whole thing. One year to the day of his brother's surgery there I was with another baby boy unable to keep down his food. I remember so clearly during all the waiting at Vanderbilt last year thinking that by this time next year (now this year) we might have another baby. I was thinking how crazy life would be if we did, but how nice it would be to have them all close together. I never dreamed that I'd be at almost exactly the same place a year later.
Thanks for all the prayers for the little guy. I'll let you know (or someone will) when we know when the surgery will be. |
