This is a picture of Sophia's first chicken pock, in case you haven't seen one before.

Below are some pictures of Desdi, Kayla, and Jaydon welding. They have made a paint cart, and a cabinet door drying rack for our shop. They also made a step to put on the wheel of your car to see in the engine. (I don't know what you call it.)

lydiasmotherI have never had the pox's yet, I was so scared I was going to get them when pregnant. I am exposed to them at the office and try not to be around the children that have them, even tho I just recently got revaccinated due to exposure one night. I hope I don't get them now at this late age, I know it can be very dangerous. I wish someone would find a cure/remedy to those things. Poor Sophia maybe she did not get them/or will get them as bad?
homeschoolmomma23Someone gave me some starter with the recipe. I would think, though, to start starter, it would just be a cup of milk, cup of sugar, cup of flour to set for a bit. I can email you the recipe if you want.
green_gourmetThat looks awesome! My boys would love that!
im_a_texanYou are welcome!
stitchinmomWhen can my boys come there and do that????
beejayThank you!! :)
barrel_racingyou're welcome!!!!!!! ;) it waz fun. :O
neentothebeanI bet you are so glad they have all had the pox now and that it is over!! Wish that was the case for us:)
It is so neat to see your kids doing things like welding...good stuff!!
howcolwhitOh yes, these chicken pox, can keep ones family overwhelmed for weeks! I remember well when Leah brought the pox home from school. All four of the children had them throughout the entire month! Leah and Edwin had them the worst. Nathan's was mild and pretty much Myron's case. Myron was only 10 months old if I remember right. He had them on his scalp and elsewhere somewhat. I was glad that they all had them at the same time frame. It is so good to see your children learning these trades. This will help them throughout their lives for sure!
dragon_blade*grins* That looks amazing! :D Poor Sophie!! Are all the kids COMPLETELY over the chicken pox now?
armywifeYou posted on my pleo a little while back about my legs hurting. Thank you so much for the advice. I hadn't tried that. Now that I'm out of my first trimester I feel much better. Tired, but not hurting like I did before. I'll keep that in mind though in case it comes back.

It's been a while... 11-24-08 09:09pm CST

The chicken pox are finally over!

Sophia update:
She has been walking for a few weeks now. She is also good at dancing.
She dances when she hears music, and gets excited when she sees her daddy leading singing. She waves her arms around.
She loves to climb, especially onto the couch.
She loves to get her nails trimmed. Shawn has always clipped our babies' nails. When he gets out the clippers (BTW Shawn uses toenail clippers, not fingernail clippers. --easier to manipulate with big fingers.), she sticks out her finger and puts it as close to the nail clippers as she can. She will sit still the whole time.
She loves to go outside.
A few days ago she started pointing at everything. This is usually accompanied with jabbering.
She started reading by putting a book on her face or head, and "reading" it.
She has also started putting fisher-price people (the really old style) in their cars.
Yesterday she learned about light switches. She can turn them on/off and looks toward the light when it turns on/off. Amazing. They learn SO fast.
kristindoulaHow sweet! :-) I was happy to finally see your name in white again. ;-) We are currently on the lookout for a chicken pox party, as none of ours have had it yet...how did it go at your house?
tanjaOur girls have not had the chicken pox yet, wouldn't mind if they got them. Your Sophia sure is sweet.
matermagistraSO sweet! My Trina is walking 5-10 steps at a time and gaining speed every day. She also just started saying MAMA...I thought she'd never say it.
laurieojThe chicken pox are never fun! Sophia sounds like she's at such a sweet stage...as are most stages. :)
lydiasmotherTo fast for my liking!!! Glad to hear that you are all on the mend.
loveofjebsShe souunds so cute and that's a fun age!
sallyanneHannah had heard from Desdi (via telephone) that Sophie was walking. So exciting. I love to watch my babies learn...they are amazing!
karatemomShe's doing so much! Glad you all your kids are over the chicken pox.
stitchinmomWow! I can't believe that tiny little girl is walking. I looked at your pics of her on facebook the other day, she's so cute! Glad to see you back on here.
dragon_bladeOH! That's wonderful!! :D :) Desdi had told me that she was walking, but not all the other adorable things!! She's growing so fast!!!!!
green_gourmetChicken pox! Poor you! I'm glad it is all over:)
barrel_racingHello! long time no post! hehe
neentothebeanSo much fun to hear about Sophia!! I love to hear how much you enjoy her and loved seeing your whole family enjoy her:) She sure is cute!!
Cecilia is walking too! It is so much fun:) It has gone so fast!
laurieojI hope y'all had a great Thanksgiving!

Ma Ma Ma Ma Ma Ma 08-27-08 11:41am CST
My baby called me Ma Ma Ma Ma today (she started this two days ago). I LOVE that sound.

Shawn and the three older kids returned from Minnesota. They went there to pick up some machinery for our cabinet shop. I'm glad they are back.

Meanwhile, I was sick-- recovering from Mastitis. :(

Also, you should know about this modern-day HERO. I was discussing with my children what it means to be a hero. A lesson in their "schoolwork" questioned them who they would choose as a modern-day hero and why. Other than looking at the definition which included, "someone who is known for courageous and noble deeds", I wanted them to come up with an answer on their own. I did have to convince them that the definition didn't say you have to be a martyr or "live way back then" to be a hero. Anyway, after some thought, Kayla suggested Jeb & Sheila. So, Jeb and Sheila, thank you for being a hero to my children, and all of us.

leahabigailHello!!
lydiasmotherOh to hear those first words again, now Lydia is calling me mom and sometimes tara--that is a no no. lol
sallyanneYes...I had that problem...I did not rest enough. Mine actually lasted several weeks...ugh. Rest!! You'll get better quicker! You must be better by September 28th :)
leahabigail:)
matermagistraOK, Trina is almost 10 months old and will *not* say Mama. She says dada and tries to say Tessa, and Bubba, for her brothers. But no mama!

I feel for you on the Mastitis. I had that with Ethan and it was horrible! I hope you are better now.

And I think Jeb and Sheila are pretty awesome too!
homeschoolmomma23I have a friend, SmileyBeth, who is thinking of homeschooling who I have directed to the Elijah Company. They helped me out so much 12 years ago when we were in the planning stages.
karatemomProvines mentioned JD the other day and that made me think that he was your brother in law. What is he up to?
didowWhat a wonderful thing for your kids to say and for you to be able to tell your friends.

I remember having to take it easy while I was nursing. I could feel it coming on. I'd tell Danny, "I've got to get some rest today." He'd rearrange his schedule to help me out. One day in bed and I was a new woman.
mreid72That's extremely kind of you. Hopefully, we won't have to take you up on that offer!

So how's JD anyway? He's still in Tampa? Married?
loveofjebsAre you doing better?
rainouthi there, renee' (murff) martin here, tell the family i said hello!
barrel_racingFlorida here we come!!!!!!!!!!!! (If Ike doesn't get us first. ) :D
swiftedgeJosh is saying Mamum now. :P
juliamiriam:) I should get the books of the shelf today or tomorrow. I am starting to write it Sunday or Monday! :)
sallyanneI loved your 101 Dalmations comment :) Too funny...we thought that, too!

We have not seen Chloe, but have put out some food for her on the other side of the house in that little side yard with the fence between our home and the neighbor's. This way she will not starve and I will not feel guilty until that Animal Control guy learns how to catch a dog :)
ex_patPlease email me (email address on my home page) a dedication, thought or scripture that you would like put on the dedication page of the cookbook. We are also encluding camp directors etc. Thanks.
juliamiriamThanks!
barrel_racingI want to play:
nugglefriendcuzHey Teresa! Just wanted to say Hi. It's Tammy(williams)Kinder.
stitchinmomSounds good. Be safe!
laurieojHave fun at the HS campout. I would love for us to go one year...maybe next year. Share pictures.
barrel_racingI tagged you mumma!
photofreakHello, Shawn's girl. Tell me about my niece and great niece, and 2 great nephews. Is their momma on here? I can see that you are on here about as often as I am on mine blog! Hope all of you and yours are doing great. We just had a meeting w/ Jeff Young. It was a very good gospel meeting. It was good to see him. I think the last time I saw him was about 15+ years ago. Hope the fall Texas days are great. We just had our 3rd annual pumpkin party this past weekend. I think 59 people came and a lot were missing! It was perfect weather and the bonfire was great. Our fall thusfar as been such a blessing and beautiful! Enjoy His Creation and Praise the Creator! Gotta go. Give love to my family when you see them at church or whenever you bump into them next!
lydiasmotherJust thinking of you all and wondering how you all are doing? Well here so far.
mreid72Teresa, which congregation do y'all attend there in Huntsville? There's a college student from here that's in Huntsville and needs to know about the church there.

Volume control... 08-11-08 01:13pm CST
The other day, we were in our Suburban on our way to somewhere, and I reached for the volume knob to turn the noise down, only the radio wasn't on. :) One of the kids said, "Mom you can't just "turn" us down!" :)

Our chicken coop is coming along. Shawn has tendonitis, so he asked a couple of guys from our cabinet shop (that don't mind working on a Saturday) to come and help. My dad came to help, too. Of course the kids were right along beside them. So, we are making progress. :)

matermagistraThat's a great list. Wish I was in that class.
lydiasmothereeeeeeeeeekkkkkkk on that list some of those words are HUGE! LOL. yeah i hope to catch a few of the sights in the sky tonight! I would love to be in Montana to see it tho--could you imagine?
tanjaThat reading list is amazing.

Yea, remotes wont work to turn down the kids. Too bad. hehehehe
barrel_racingI must say, some of them sound pretty interesting!
laurieojGreat reading list! I love the quote about the volume. Sounds like my van! :)
neentothebeanWow, what a reading list!!! She will be doing some neat stuff:)
sabrinaruckelI've done that volume thing too!! hehe! Of course I remember you. It's good to hear from you. I don't think I knew you had a baby. How many kiddos does that make, and how old is your oldest to be reading all that? WOW!
sallyanneSounds like my 10th grade AP English...
fyra_draikspell^_^ That's funny. Meaning that you fell asleep during Star Wars. Because Hannah fell asleep in the Theater when we saw Star Wars 3. I was just quivering with rage at Anakin.
sallyanneWe got the swords (foam) at the dollar store. It is so cute to see him fencing :)
neentothebeanWe would love to have you here and be with you !!! Just let us know:) We will have you for dinner or lunch or whatever you have time for...or you are totally welcome to stay with us even...we would love to have you!!:)
nannathank you!
timaHi! So nice to see you on here! That's neat to hear about your potty training your baby! Seems like a good idea. It was so good to get to know you better during the last campout. :)
sports_guy_h12haha! yea
sabrinaruckelIsn't she cute? Did you know Alicia Hodges and I married brothers and now we have kids the same ages... it's great. AND - her mom, Donna, is moving to her neighborhood next month. Yea!
dragon_bladeYou know how some people call kids "goofballs"? It means the same thing when they call them a "ham". You know..."you are such a ham!" "What a goofball!" I just don't get where they come from. :) *lol*
dragon_blade*lol* I'm sorry!! I thought in your comment that you meant that you hadn't heard of them!!!! That was stupid of me...my mistake. :o
notcoolHahahaha! That's what I was thinking.
dragon_blade I know! :D Camp is so close now, and I'm getting even more excited every day... :)
barrel_racingHey mumma!!!!!!!!!! Love you and miss you! ^_^ :-* So, how are the girls?
dragon_blade:) Thanks, my Meez is actually doing something that I do for once. Instead of standing in a dress that I can only dream about, in a setting of the same origin. ;)
dragon_bladeSo, how are you all doing? Everyone here is doing spiffingly! ;)
karatemomShe's a fellow counselor from NV. Her old roomie from FC is on here so I was trying to post it on her blog, but instead had to just post it to mine.
barrel_racingYes it does. Why?
dragon_bladeOoh yes, geodes are very neat!! :)

Potty Training or Parent Training? 08-05-08 06:57pm CST
OK, so I was one of those who read "To Train Up A Child" and totally dismissed the potty training part. "You have to be kidding me", "I don't think so", "That's crazy" and advising people to read the book and ignore the potty-training chapter --all those things came out of my mouth. Besides --all 5 of my children were easy to potty train. All of them were trained by 2 1/2. I always said I wanted them to be able to pull up their own pants before I trained them --otherwise it would be parent-training. Boy was I wrong. I have been training Sophia for about 2 months now. It is so cute. She makes a sound now when she has to go, and when I sit her on her little potty, she goes right away. She isn't 100% yet, but I have saved many diapers. She is sooooo cute! and really I can't believe it. She was training her baby when we went to visit a while back. I thought this indeed was a good idea and worth a try. So, now you probably think I am crazy too. Thank you Sally.
tanjaCrazy? Yea - probably! But, aren't we all. :)
sallyanneGo Sophie!!! Isn't it great?!
loveofjebsYea that sounded crazy to me when I read it. Just couldn't believe it would work. Yeah for her.
lydiasmotherI did not read it all maybe I should? Lydia has no interest, she did for a bit and now has no no no interest! I guess i should find my book huh?
ncreavesJosh probably doesn't want this circulating, but as a parent it is my right to embarrass him (he's embarrassed me a few times :). Anyway, he was potty trained in one week and didn't wet the bed at night and never had an accident after that week. I thought that was pretty cool for a little guy just over 2 years old. Now the world knows. Sounds like Sophia is a star pupil too. By the way, I love her name. Here's hoping for continued success!
neentothebeanI need all that expertise here!!!
kristindoulaWe considered doing EC with Ethan (and we did potty him some when he was an infant)...but I never got into it. Besides, our cloth diapers are too cute! ;-)
matermagistraI guess I just need to find out more about it. It seems to be too much work, like you said...parent training. But perhaps there is more to learn from it, especially if it saves on diapers!
howcolwhitNot only the child needs to be aware, but the parent must really listen and pay closer attention to the child during this time frame. Once a parent knows the childs schedule pretty well, it helps even after they pretty much are trained to know as to what to espect from them during church services. Or just how to teach them to potty before bible study or church services and then afterwards and not during. A parent can control this most of the time, with closer observance of the childs schedule. There are those few exceptions that can't be avoided. It worked with our children and still they are all a bit different to deal with.
scrappyhappymamaNo, we don't get to go this year.

Great job with the EC! Maybe I'll get brave enough with the next baby.
didowI'm glad it's a success for you. I'm an old dog that doesn't learn "new" tricks easily. I still think the parent is trained but there's nothing wrong with that.
sallyanne^^I think the parent is ALWAYS the one trained at first even with toddler potty training and even, puppy training :)

EC does not need to=perfect catches. 100% days are great and they will happen for you. However, it is good to remember that the focus is on training and conditioning--just like the first few days/weeks with a toddler. You expect them to have misses. Now, I think #2's are the exception. I think we've missed, maybe 2-3 in over nine months...I'd say that almost as good as a trained toddler, but I don't remember! So from 4 months to 13.5 months I've only had to wash 2-3 yukky diapers. This is GREAT!

Do try to stick with the sound. We do our sound periodically, but he usually grabs his books to read on the potty or his swords for a sword fight :). The picture of a baby on the potty sword fighting is just too cute!

You are doing great. Keep it fun. Don't worry about the misses, they'll happen. Just revel in the catches...she'll be aware that the potty is the appropriate place to go and eventually will go there all the time :)

Josh looks in the potty when he is done now and nods his head up and down if it is full. This is really cute to me. We did the clapping thing when he was a small baby, but now we just comment on how smart he is :)
sallyanneOh, and they go so often as babies...sometimes 1-2 times an hour with tinkles...so it is normal to get two potties and miss one in a two-three hour period. Most mornings Josh wakes up dry with a very fresh diaper and tinkles immediatly. This is great.

I noted on Wednesday night he tinkled twice during Bible class. I teach, so I keep the potty close to my room and have the kids do a reading when I take him out (or recite memory verses or sing a song). It is not a distraction for them...they are used to me nursing or caring for babies while I teach :)
